Bernard and Shirley Kinsey talk about their collection of artifacts and works of art that illustrate the contributions of African Americans to this country, which is on display through June 23 at Holocaust Museum Houston.

The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection celebrates the achievements and contributions of Black Americans from 1595 to the present day. It features more than 100 artifacts collected by Shirley and Bernard Kinsey, those they collected on their countless travels and brought back home, during the five decades of their marriage.

Numbering over 40,000 pieces today, The Kinsey Collection has been viewed by more than 16 million people in 35 cities worldwide.

Holocaust Museum Houston (HMH) is pleased to announce the widely acclaimed exhibition, The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection, celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black Americans from 1595 to the present, is coming to Houston January 12 through June 23, 2024.

When the public has the chance to view a monumental, but private collection of art, it usually occurs if the collection is loaned to a museum and perhaps organized as a special exhibition. On even rarer occasions, a collector might establish a museum dedicated to the collection.

‘The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection’ coming to HMH

Opening January 12, 2024, this groundbreaking exhibition features over 100 works of art, photographs, rare documents and more, celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black Americans from 1595 to the present day.

Highlights from The Kinsey Collection opens at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University on August 23rd, 2022 and on view through December 30th, 2022.

“It’s a full-circle moment for us,” Shirley Kinsey said during a walk-through of the exhibition, which is set to open to the public as a ticketed event on Feb. 23 and includes one-hour self-guided tours from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursdays-Mondays through April 2022. “It really feels like we’re coming back home.”

The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art will host the public opening for its spring 2022 exhibition The Cultivators: Highlights from the Kinsey African American Art and History Collection on Saturday, February 19, 2022*, from noon to 5 PM.
